“Xunantunich” is one of the oldest archaeological reserves in Belize. This 51.6 acre landmark sits across the river from the village of San Jose Succotz in the Cayo District. A translation into Maya meaning “Maiden of the Rock” or “Stone Lady”, Xunantunich is accessible via a ferry across the Mopan.

At the center of the site is El Castillo, standing 130 feet tall and is the second tallest Maya structure in the country, offering commanding views of the neighbouring settlements as well as the jungle in the valley.

This is a Classic Period site, with the site core being built around AD 600 and occupied for about 400 years.

While working in school you will have the opportunity to interact with kids and also learn the culture. The most important thing about working in schools is to immerse fully in the culture of Belize to understand every need.
